S-E-X. It is a word loaded with social taboos and cultural mystery. It is an act that is 100% necessary for the continuation of the human race and yet it is treated as if it is unnatural, even down right dirty. IT’S NOT!

But this stigma is what makes parents freak out when their teen announces he or she is ready to give it a try. It is this very stigma that most people are afraid of coming out in the open, even if they’re already sexually active. It’s also a common believe that being knowledgeable in sex or even sexual health is seen as being promiscuous and inappropriately “experienced”. Is it a sin to be well informed?

Now, although this reaction is an instinctive one for most people to have, it is not without some merit. Sex in this age is filled with risks – ranging from emotional pitfalls and physical concerns. It is important to be equipped with the right information, for example, knowing how to stay safe from sexually transmitted diseases and knowing how to determine the right choice of contraception for you.

More importantly, one should be aware of the need to be educated and equipped with the right knowledge. For a start, one should start talking either to their partner, family members and doctors regarding their sexual health and contraception usage. It’s crucial to talk to your doctor to find out about the right contraceptive choice for you, instead of relying on hear say and abounding myths.

So, be empowered and in control of your lives and start speaking out!
